PreSchool-Grade 1-While playing house, Erik is prompted by a questioning friend to ask his mother if he has a daddy. She tells him that he had a daddy in the beginning but that he left. She further explains that some parents get married and take care of their children together, but that she and Erik's father never married because they were so young. Erik's mother emphasizes how much she wanted him and how excited his daddy was when he was born. The story ends with the boy's mother reminding him of the important role his uncle and grandfather play in his life. The text is written in a positive and nurturing manner, and lets children know that there are many different types of family situations. An informative section for single parents on ways they can deal with this issue follows the story. The illustrations are somewhat stiff and amateurish, but do an adequate job of visualizing the text for young children. This book should have a place in libraries, counselors' offices, and social workers' collections.

She answers his difficult question and others by explaining that there are different kinds of daddies, and Erik's was too young to take on the responsibilities of marriage. She reassures him that she will always be there for him and urges him to spend time with his uncle and grandpa who love him. Following the story is a section devoted to single parents, which, although seemingly geared toward less-experienced single parents, provides good tips for any single parent handling similar questions and emphasizes the importance of being honest and positive. I had this book growing up learning to play the piano. It was my dad's. Now I have my own. 45 years later its like an old friend.

As a teacher, it is important to have music that is at once easy, but also that challenges. These 25 pieces do just that.I have one student who is aggressive in his learning, and already at 6 months from nothing is tackling #2 with fair consistency. He is finding that as intimidating as these can look, once played through, he realized they are not so difficult, but will take a little time to learn to play well... and then a little more time to learn to play at tempo.

I have very limited, beginning ability on the piano and with reading music. This book is a wonderful place to develop and practice. The pieces do not start out overly simple and are progressively more complex. Each piece introduces some new musical elements (accidentals, key change, triplets, etc). All exercise both left and right hands. And all are enjoyable to hear.Because the pieces are all fairly short, I began playing from memory more than from the written music. To counter that, I suggest playing three or four during a practice session.By the way, with a little googling you can find MIDI renditions of these songs on the internet to compare with your playing.

I am a student of piano; I started last year, rather late in life. I bought a new piano in February and my instructor came over to give it a good "breaking in". He was playing music I likely will never be able to even attempt, from Beethoven, Bach, and Mozart. Then, he played some of the etudes from this work by Burgmuller. I thought to myself "this sounds like it is within reach!" I bought this, and started in on Etude #1. I thought my instructor was going to have kittens when he heard me trying to play it, saying I was tackling this way too early. But, tackle it I did. Even though I have played for only 14 or 15 months, I am able to play this with at least some competence.Quibbles: #2, L’Arabesque, is supposed to have staccato chords pretty much all the way through. They are not notated as such exceptat the beginning. Not sure about the other pieces yet. Some of the printing is smeared (La Candeur, line 4, last measure). I looked in my instructor’s 30+ - year old copy: it has the very same flaws. Note to Schirmer: as well as this sells, how about some new printing plates?I highly recommend this for any piano student who is at about one year or more.

I love Burgmuller. I had played a few of his compositions in the past, but had no idea what a rich musical experience I would have when I purchased this book. I have also purchased his book of 18 Characteristic Studies and am even more enthralled.

I love these little songs. Deceptively simple to play and yet very nice sounding. I still play many of the songs in the book and perform them for wedding receptions and other elegant functions. I especially like Ave Maria, Inquietude, and Harmony of the Angels, but all the selections are well composed and fun to perform.

At 61 and learning the piano, these pieces are just fun to play but not watered down. Another example a genius composer.

I'll start with a preface: I have been playing piano for four years, I started when I was 18, and aside from six one-unit community college classes, I've never had any formal training. That said, this book is (in my opinion) a little tougher than the first "First Lessons in Bach" book and at the end is still easier than most of the second "First Lessons" Bach book. It fits squarely in the middle, which would be a good run up towards Schumann's Album Für Die Jugend or a book of Bach's inventions.Also it would be useful for an accomplished pianist to run through these as one would Hanon or Czerny, only these are actual songs, which helps to break up the monotony of finger exercises. Not to say Hanon or Czerny aren't important; diversity is simply a good thing to have.I'm a total amateur, and I was looking for something less intense than Bach, less repititious than Hanon, and less insane than Czerny. Burgmüllers Twenty-Five Easy and Progressive Studes fits the bill nicely.
