We are pleased to publish this eighth edition of a text that has become a classic among the machine design community. This new edition contains a number of important improvements over the previous edition.

The example problems have been reformatted using a structured approach. This addition should make the logic of the example problems much easier to follow, and the authors recommend that the student of machine design adopt this structured approach in their work.

Most of the spreadsheet modules found in the previous edition have been upgraded and improved. In many cases the use of "drop-down menus" allows the user to switch between unit systems without the need to switch to a different module. Additionally, the spreadsheet modules now include command buttons to allow the user to view additional information of importance to their application. In one of the spreadsheets, the user can produce a scaled plot of the Mohr's Circle for a given state of two-dimensional stress. Some completely new spreadsheet modules have been added to allow a greater range of problems to be solved.

Perhaps one of the most important new features of this edition is the inclusion of a chapter on design with plastic materials. This chapter, written by L. E. Hornberger, a world-class leader in plastics design and recycling, provides an excellent overview of how plastic materials are having a strong positive influence on the design of machine elements. This new edition represents over 80 years of experience of its three authors in industry and in the classroom. As with any "work in process," we continue to welcome your helpful suggestions for improvement of this text.

About the Author
Andrew Alexander Bonar (1810-92), the youngest brother of Horatius, was born in Edinburgh and educated at Edinburgh University. He was ordained at Collace, Perthshire in 1838, where he was minister in the Church of Scotland to the Disruption (1843) and in the Free Church until moving to Finnieston Free Church, Glasgow in 1856. He was Moderator of the Free Church Assembly in 1878. He visited Palestine with Robert Murray M Cheyne in 1839, and was his friend's biographer after his early death.

Several of Bonar's books are published by the Trust, including his Commentary on Leviticus in the Geneva series, but he is perhaps best-known for the forementioned Memoir and Remains of R. M. M'Cheyne. Bonar was tireless in his evangelistic endeavours, and he epitomised the text in Hebrew above the entrance to his church in Glasgow: 'He that winneth souls is wise'.

Found the book to be very helpful and to help me look at things from a different perspective. I still refer to it from time to time. I highly recommend these books for your collection so you can read, and re-read as needed. Do you want to time travel? Then READ! Get lost in the NOW...or should I say found.

I mean, where do I begin. I’ll just start with this book changed my life. Literally. I was given this book about 5 years ago at a time where I was looking for certain answers so I could start to make sense of my life. So I was open to receive this book and everything it had to say (very important btw). After reading this, it’s like Don Miguel Ruiz himself lifted the blurry filter that had covered my eyes and he allowed me to SEE SO CLEARLY. Literally the most life-changing book I’ve ever read. I don’t know if it’ll do the same for you but I base my whole life now off of the lessons in this book. (Then I began to read his other books, The Four Agreements and The Mastery of Love. Incredible). ABSOLUTELY A BOOK FOR EVERYONE. EVERYONE NEEDS TO READ THIS BOOK. Maybe we’ll all understand each other a lot better and begin to take control of our own lives. I highly recommend reading this book FIRST, then read The Four Agreements; the two books go hand in hand.) Maybe it’ll change your life too and you’ll begin to understand your life and people in general in a whole new light. It really puts it all into perspective.

I've read several books of Don Miguel Ruiz, and love "the voice of knowledge" and "mastery of love". His words are simple but powerful, and I've grew to be a better person because of his books. I never wrote a review before, but I feel like, this time I have the responsibility to share his wisdom to my friend like you. About the Author
Daniel Brown, PhD, is Associate Clinical Professor of Psychology at Harvard Medical School, where he teaches courses on performance excellence for health professionals and judges. He is the author of sixteen books, including Memory, Trauma-Treatment, and the Law (with Alan Scheflin and Cory Hammond), winner of the 1999 Guttmacher award from the American Psychiatric Association for outstanding contribution to forensic psychiatry.

David S. Elliott, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and former president of the Rhode Island Psychological Association.
