About the Author

Patrick Frank has taught in many higher education environments, from rural community colleges to private research universities. His recent scholarly work has focused on Latin American graphic arts. He is author of Posada’s Broadsheets: Mexican Popular Imagery 1890–1910 and Los Artistas del Pueblo: Prints and Workers’ Culture in Buenos Aires (University of New Mexico Press). He has curated five exhibitions of Latin American prints. He has also edited a volume of artists’ writings, Readings in Latin American Modern Art (Yale University Press). He served as collaborating author for the modern section of Marilyn Stokstad’s Art History (third edition). He earned M.A. and Ph.D. degrees at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and is currently teaching the History of Modern Latin American Art at Pitzer College in Claremont, Calif. He lives in the seaside community of Venice.

One of my most favorite books from my homeland of Australia. Illustrations and story are superb. Extremely well written by a world respected author. Mem Fox is just the best! The story of Lou is so cute and inspirational. I bought it as a gift for a friend's baby. She loves the book and so did everyone else at the baby shower. And of course there is the cute exotic Aussie aspect to it - perfect baby or children's gift....and adult gift. Especially a unique gift to give in USA from an Aussie.

I love Ms. Fox's books! They keep kid's interests so well; especially with the colorful illustrations!Koalo Lou is a good book for a child about to become a big brother or sister for the first time. It's a good way to communicate that although Mommy doesn't have as much time to spend with the older child, she loves her (him) just as much as she did. A sweet message for a parent and child to share.

I first discovered this book through one of my children's book authors courses. I was attracted by the beautiful illustrations which are colorful, expressive and capture all sorts of wildlife from the Australian bush (one of Mem Fox's intentions). Koala Lou's facial expressions truly tell the whole story, and the mother koala's face radiates love and pride. Then, upon reading the book, I truly realized the book's value.Koala Lou received a lot of attention and affection from everyone, but it is her mother who loves her most. She would always say, "Koala Lou, I DO love you!" But then siblings were born, and Koala Lou didn't receive as much attention. To get her mother to notice her and to win back that affection, Koala Lou decides to enter the Bush Olympics. After much training, she comes in 2nd place and is devastated. When Koala Lou returns home at the end of the day sadly dragging her 2nd place medal behind her, her mother hugs her and assures her that she still loves her and always will no matter what.The lessons children and parents can take away from this story include: winning isn't everything, and 2nd place is not the most horrible thing in the world; a parent may be busy with other siblings, but that doesn't mean a child goes unloved or unrecognized; children do not need to do spectacular things to win the love of their parents -- that love is always there and it is unconditional; and finally, as a parent, I need to let my child know how much I love her every day, all day.

Sweet message to share with my bookworm 5 year old. She enjoyed the story, the moral, and the snuggles while we read it. Probably not one we will read all that often, but will hold a special place in our hearts and we'll pull it out as a needed reminder of my endless love.

This is a lovely book for young readers, not only because the story and pictures are sweet, simple, and engaging, but because it is important that children feel loved and not mistake fewer reassurances from the mother for lack of affection. This is an especially great book for children who are about to lose that valued only-child status--Lou's feelings are common among children with new siblings. It is not challenging or particularly rousing as far as stories go, but then I do not think that is its intent. It creates a warm sense of comfort and peace.

Sweet book, especially for children with brothers and/or sisters. Great story about unconditional love. Koala Lou doesn't have to get first to find her mother's love, a story parents would want their children to understand.

It's a little presumptuous to title a book, "The Knowledge Book," don't you think? It's even more presumptuous to subtitle a book "Everything you need to know to get by in the 21st century." However, in spite of the self-hype, I have to admit this is a very appealing book. While it would be ridiculous to think that a single book (short of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy itself) could contain all one would need to know about a century that has barely even begun, "The Knowledge Book" certainly covers the bases. It has sections on the universe and the earth, discoveries and inventions (covering all the major sciences), social life (including politics and economics), religion, philosophy, psychology, and, of course, the arts.It's actually amazing how much information is packed into this attractive book. There are about 500 glossy pages with small font, and each page is devoted to more than one topic. The range of topics covered, therefore, is phenomenal, but, as might be expected, there isn't time to say much about each topic.But the real appeal of the book is that it's what I call a "curiosity factory." That is, it presents a smorgasbord of different topics with enough tantalizing information to either make you aware of a subject or fact or, hopefully, curious enough to go and explore that topic in greater detail. The wonderful, abundant, color photographs help transform what could have looked like a boring book into a virtual explosion of information before your very eyes. While the text is geared toward older readers, the photographs will suck in younger readers and entice them into worlds previously unknown to them.With a special emphasis on the latest technology, science, and developments, the book nearly lives up to its subtitle, at least in a small way. And that, in itself, is a pretty significant achievement. If you're looking for an in-depth book on various topics, this isn't the book for you: you have to understand the genre of the book to appreciate it and its place in the home library.So go ahead and buy the book: who knows who may find the book in your house and be inspired by this beautiful book. It's worth its price (which is amazingly low for its quality) for all of the colorful photographs alone!

What can I say? This book has everything that you could possibly need. I bought this for my girlfriend, and she absolutely loves it! It is a high quality manufactured book with great pictures, and captions too. You can study the details of literally everything. I can't say enough great things about this all being in one book. National Geographic hit a home run. This is great for people who unfortunately didn't get a chance to learn all of this in school.

The layout is good. Full of pictures. This would be especially great for kids and those who need encouragement to read or aren't huge readers. It's better for a younger person than The Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, which I love as well but doesn't have a lot of pictures or color so it is better for those who don't need pictures and flashy things in order to read.
